A Little Inspiration

January 23, 2011

I really need to get my sewing groove back on.  I haven’t sewn a thing since Christmas Eve, and I kind of miss it.  But I’ve got a sick little girl on my hands, who hasn’t felt well for a long time and this weekend took a turn for the worse.  I haven’t left my house even to get the mail since Friday.  I hope I can get her in to see the doctor tomorrow.  It breaks my heart to see her so sick.

Here are some of my favorite sewing/quilty things from flickr.  Now, if only finding my own inspiration was as easy as finding these.

A Few Dreams

January 22, 2011

This is a little of what I’ve been dreaming about lately, & not so lately.  From my Art Journals.

RV Dreams

[ When this one happens you can bet that I will be painting turquoise racing stripes on our camper.  And I’ll absolutely have pink curtains; the dream wouldn’t be complete any other way. ]

[ This fits into the obsession-but-I’ve-already-waited-six-months category.  So as soon as I find the one I want it will be mine! ]

I hope you are having a good weekend!

Feeling Foxy

January 21, 2011

I know, the fox and the owl and the hedgehog are the trendy darlings of the crafty world.  I know.  They are adorable and fluffy/feathery and have big eyes poking out from their cutie little faces.  But do you want to know something.  Foxes are seriously cute.

[ Fantastic Wool Fox Coat from littlegoodall ]

I came across this foxy jacket yesterday (thank you Bright Yellow World!) and I immediately dropped everything to poke around etsy and find all things beautiful and foxy.  And after a perhaps embarrassing amount of time searching through over 9,000 items labeled “fox”  here is the foxiest of them all.  Also, I’m pretty sure I’m going to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox tonight.

[ Original Mr. Fox Paperdoll fabric from mummysam, sold in Fat Quarters or Yards. ]

[ Paper Fox Tags from OhMyCavalier ]

[ Adorable, but pricey, handmade knitted fox by Hannah Haworth ]

[ Foxy Fox print from Dowdy Studio ]

So, the moral of this story…. well, foxes are cute.  But that foxy jacket is the cutest of them all.  I wonder if I could make that….

I’ll have a real post tomorrow.  Something not focused entirely on my latest obsession/online crush.  Cross my heart and kiss my elbow.

Popcorn is Still Gross.

January 20, 2011

Yesterday was supposedly “National Popcorn Day.”  Which I think sounds made up, but whatever.  Scott and Creamie shared a batch of home-popped popcorn last night and they were both pretty pleased.

January 18 2011

It was adorable watching Creamie sit by her daddy, watching basketball, and chowing down from her very own little bowl.

the popcorn look

I gave Scott these two matching popcorn buckets for his birthday something like five years ago.  The plan was that the little one was for me, but I’ve since realized I’d much rather eat Oreo’s.

But I still think that popcorn is gross.  It’s only good for stringing into garlands to put on the Christmas tree.  But eating it?  Ewww.  As soon as Creamie was in bed I pulled out the Oreo’s.  Because I’m not at a point in my life that I get excited about sharing them with anyone.

I’ve been working on some new art journal pages, and hopefully I’ll get some posted this week.  I also started watching Mad Men.  Strictly to look at the pretty vintage dresses.  I have a notepad next to the laptop so I can draw the things I like.  So many pretty pretty dresses.

Thrifted Clothes

January 19, 2011

I found this shirt a few weeks ago at the thrift store, and I just keep loving it more and more.  I think it was $2.  As I have looked through Creamie’s clothes I realized that I kind of have a thing for the kitschy embroidered clothes from foreign coutries.  I have a dress I brought home from Russia, my sister brought me a beautiful shirt for Creamie from her trip to Hungary, and my other sister brought me a pretty blue dress/shirt from her recent Mexico trip.  And I have a few more that I’ve picked up at the thrift store.

El Salvador Shirt

I never thought I’d be that mom, but I kind of like them on Creamie.  And, if we are being honest, 90% of her clothes come from the thrift store or a second hand kids clothes store.  I just can’t bring myself to pay $24 for a pair of jeans for her when I can find the same pair next year at the thrift store for $4.  I’ll take the 20 I saved and spend it on… well other stuff at the thrift store I guess.  Ha!

[ She really wanted a ride on her daddy’s briefcase at lunch today.  It was pretty hilarious. ]

This shirt needed a little work before she could wear it.  The head opening wasn’t big enough to go over her much smaller than average noggin.  So I made a slit down the back and sewed some thin bias binding along the opening to finish the edges and make a cute tie.  Looking at it now I can’t tell that it didn’t come that way.

Chilling out in the sunshine

I’ve got quite a little stack of thrifted clothes for me to refashion for myself.  One of my goals this year was to refashion something for me, and I hope to get cracking on it soon.  Right after I find my sewing mojo… it has gone missing since Christmas.  And I really need to find it, like yesterday, because Creamie’s birthday is next week and I have some projects to do!

Lullaby’s and Star Trails

January 18, 2011

I don’t usually do posts like this, but I can’t get it out of my mind.  Last night as I was tucking Creamie into bed she looked up at me and said “Mama, sing a sing.”  I am not really a singer.  Like at all.  I much prefer to play the piano for the singers than do any actual singing in public.  But I guess what they say about motherhood is correct.  It makes you do things you never dreamed of doing before.  Like singing out loud.  In front of someone.  Someone with ears.  (My Dad on the other hand has a fantastic singing voice.  A few weeks ago his choir sang this song during one of their performances, and I guess it was in my head.)  I’ve been singing her the same few lullaby’s for her whole two years and neither one of us gets bored with them.  But last night for whatever reason I choose to sing this song to Creamie.  Why do lullaby’s always make me cry?  You don’t need to tell me.  I already know.  It has everything to do with this face.  And Love.

my sleeping baby

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight,
Someone’s thinking of me and loving me tonight.

Delicate Universe

Somewhere out there someone’s saying a prayer,
That we’ll find one another in that big somewhere out there.

Vilano Point Moon Fantasy

And even though I know how very far apart we are,
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star.

dead tree polaris

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby,
It helps to think we’re sleeping underneath the same big sky.

the truth is out there

Somewhere out there if love can see us through,
Then we’ll be together somewhere out there,
Out where dreams come true.

Creamie, I love you more than words will let me express.  And I can not imagine my life without you in it.  You are everything to me.  And that is why this song makes me cry.  Love, Mama.

In Love with Roller Skates

January 17, 2011

I might have mentioned that I am slightly OCD.  I mean, my closet is an OCD dream room, someone actually called it organizational porn once, which totally made my day.  But besides organizing all my stuff and lining up the pantry in evenly spaced rows, the other OCD part of my personality means I sometimes fixate on something, and then I can’t get it out of my mind.  Sometimes for a really long time.  Othertimes, I’ll fixate for a while, and then I’ll be done.  I promised myself (and my patient hubby) that i promise not to buy anything I’m fixated on until I’ve been fixed on it for at least 6 months.  And that so far has been a good rule.  Of course, after those 6 months go by, then it’s all fair game.  Which is why I have five typewriters.  And a giant tub of vintage sheets.  And a lot of washi tape.  And Pyrex. ….. but I followed my 6 month rule!

Vintage Roller Skates

[ Cutest Rollerskates ever, by theladymargaret.  LOVE! ]

Well, this afternoon I started thinking about roller skates.  And since it’s only been one day, and I’ve got like 179 days to obsess over them before I can purchase anything, here’s a few favorites I’m obsessing over.

Roller Skates

[ image from weheartit ]

When I was in 1st grade I got a pair of roller skates for Christmas.  They were Chicago brand, black with red wheels.  And I thought they were the coolest thing on the planet.  My mom had looked for ages to find them, and couldn’t find two pair in my size to save her life.  (One for me, one for my twin sister).  Finally my uncle found two pair of boys skates and got them for my mom.  Being only six years old I had no idea that black skates are for boys.  That girls were supposed to have white skates.  And I didn’t care.  I was rolling around the kitchen a good four inches taller than I was before and it was awesome.  Seriously, awesome.

Rainbow Brite Roller Skates

[ Eek!  Vintage Rainbow Brite Roller Skates!  so so cute! ]

I would buy these for Creamie right now except that would be breaking two rules… the six month obsession rule, AND the Don’t buy clothes for Creamie unless she can wear them in the next 12 months rule.  But I kind of have a thing for Rainbow Brite. And Roller skates.  Does two obsessions cancel two rules?

Sunday Crush

January 16, 2011

I came across these sweet little paper dolls the other day created by Australian company Mae. I’ve had a half dozen tabs open ever since so I can sneak a peek at how pretty the all are.

I love them.  They come in four sets, one for each of the four seasons.  They are made from reusable fabric stickers, so you can peel and stick them over and over again.  So pretty.  I want one of everything in their shop.  (Mae on Etsy, Mae in Australia, and Mae in Europe).  Happy Sunday.

New Toys

January 15, 2011

I’ve been playing with my new phone.  And I just didn’t realize how crappy my old phone was until it got here.  Well, and until I realized the bluetooth on oldphone was shot and I ended up transferring all my contacts by hand…. well, thumb.  Lame.  But newphone… seriously awesome.

[ Hipstamatic App for iphone, Roboto Glitter lens + Float film. Love! ]

I’ve been playing with the camera.  I have a million things on my todo list, and am I doing them?  No, but my new toy is just so cool!  OK, have a good weekend.  I’m going a thrifting… shocker.  Bye.

Getting Back to My Art Journal

January 14, 2011

Today I was cleaning up my desk and I saw my old art journal.  I haven’t done anything with it for almost a year.  It was one of my very favorite things to work on, and yet… I guess I got busy with other projects and it just got pushed to the side.  Here are a few of my favorite pages, and I hope that by the end of the weekend I have added a few new ones to my book.

Art Journal Mosaic

These are all from my flickr album for an art journal class I took last year from Red Velvet Art.  I hope you have a great weekend!
