In Love with Roller Skates
I might have mentioned that I am slightly OCD. I mean, my closet is an OCD dream room, someone actually called it organizational porn once, which totally made my day. But besides organizing all my stuff and lining up the pantry in evenly spaced rows, the other OCD part of my personality means I sometimes fixate on something, and then I can’t get it out of my mind. Sometimes for a really long time. Othertimes, I’ll fixate for a while, and then I’ll be done. I promised myself (and my patient hubby) that i promise not to buy anything I’m fixated on until I’ve been fixed on it for at least 6 months. And that so far has been a good rule. Of course, after those 6 months go by, then it’s all fair game. Which is why I have five typewriters. And a giant tub of vintage sheets. And a lot of washi tape. And Pyrex. ….. but I followed my 6 month rule!
[ Cutest Rollerskates ever, by theladymargaret. LOVE! ]
Well, this afternoon I started thinking about roller skates. And since it’s only been one day, and I’ve got like 179 days to obsess over them before I can purchase anything, here’s a few favorites I’m obsessing over.

When I was in 1st grade I got a pair of roller skates for Christmas. They were Chicago brand, black with red wheels. And I thought they were the coolest thing on the planet. My mom had looked for ages to find them, and couldn’t find two pair in my size to save her life. (One for me, one for my twin sister). Finally my uncle found two pair of boys skates and got them for my mom. Being only six years old I had no idea that black skates are for boys. That girls were supposed to have white skates. And I didn’t care. I was rolling around the kitchen a good four inches taller than I was before and it was awesome. Seriously, awesome.

[ Eek! Vintage Rainbow Brite Roller Skates! so so cute! ]
I would buy these for Creamie right now except that would be breaking two rules… the six month obsession rule, AND the Don’t buy clothes for Creamie unless she can wear them in the next 12 months rule. But I kind of have a thing for Rainbow Brite. And Roller skates. Does two obsessions cancel two rules?
YES! BUY THEM NOW! Plus, a friend telling you to by them cancels ALL rules!
Ha! I can so relate! Organizational porn? Don’t play with us like that! ~grin~
Anyway, I really should have that rule.. but instead I married a man who needs the rule too! Then, we made our own rule… “if it doesn’t fit in a van, don’t buy it”! Oh wait a minute, that was the *old* rule… now it’s “if it doesn’t fit in a van… buy another van”!
I hope to see skates on those feet in six months Missy!
Pink,
Growing up, we used to go rollerskating every other Saturday. My sister and I had red and white roller skates and my dad had black rollerskates and could even skate backwards. So cool, right?
OK, so, I have this to say about the rules First, you have a really huge amount of self restraint. I am in awe. You are amazing. Second, rules are made to be broken. You have to consider the opportunity cost. Will you ever again find a pair of Rainbow Brite roller skates? Probably not. Go and get them. Now. You won’t regret it. But you might regret it if you don’t.

Um, I love those. When I was five, my cousins gave me their handmedown skates (I loved those cousins and their handmedowns!). They were purple and white, and I, too, was in heaven. My friend and I would skate through the neighborhood on every sidewalk, up every driveway, and even around inside every open garage. Those are great memories, thanks for reminding me. 🙂
the exception is “you might not be able to find them when you need them.”
So go for it. 🙂
You dont have to tempt me with roller skates, I already have two pairs and a huge box of wheels. I keep trying to talk N in to a new pair, but I dont think I can justify a new pair of skates every year. Mine arent quite as pretty as those, but I have bacon and eggs on the toes and hot pink wheels. PS, Not only are they Rainbow Bright, but they say roller derby… LOVE!
Oh man, I remember that Christmas! I am actually glad the skates weren’t pink and white–I have an obsession with black and red and am convinced that it came from the skates. And heaven forbid we are BOTH obsessed with pink. 😉

I, too, had a pair of roller skates. Dominion. White boots, red wheels. I rocked that roller rink in my day. And I had the teased bangs to prove it.
I totally had those same Rainbow Bright skates….. I wonder where they went?!
Next thing we know you are going to be pinky mcpinkster on the pinkerton roller derby squad. You go girl! I like the six month rule. I’m assuming that doesn’t apply to thrift store finds.
