It’s just cuter in mini…

November 1, 2011

This morning I made a pie for a church function tonight.  It was a sugar free pumpkin pie with an almond flour crust (sugar and gluten free,  I’m awesome.)  Almond flour pie dough is about the most awful thing I’ve ever had to work with, and after I had spent 30 minutes making it into a crust I decided that the teensy bits of leftovers should be used for SOMETHING.  I found a mini pie pan/muffin tin (they are wider and a lot shallower than a standard mini muffin tin) at the thrift store a while ago and I had just enough leftover crust to make exactly three teensy pumpkin pies.

Mini pumpkin pies!

I’ll share the recipe this week, but these three were just too cute not to show you.  Also, they tasted delicious.  And I ate all three in under a minute and didn’t feel bad about it one teensy bit.  Sugar free!  Nearly carb free!  That is practically health food.  And now that I know how well this mini pie tin works I can see myself making a whole lot of mini pies this month.  Man, I love pie.

Costume finished! Just in the knick of time!

Also, Creamie’s Halloween costume turned out to be, like, the cutest thing in the world.  My own Mini Strawberry Shortcake!  I’ll share some more pictures of it tomorrow, but wanted to give you a little peek.  Eeeek! She was so happy, and spent the whole evening telling people her name was Merry Berry Shortcake. I love her.

Picking Pumpkins

October 29, 2011

We took Creamie to pick out a pumpkin a few days ago.  She had a great time, and I was glad Scott got home from work a bit early so we could go while it was still light.  She is getting excited for Halloween, and I am getting excited to post pictures of her costume.  It is almost finished.  Yay!

the wrong pumpkin

Creamie is wearing a thrifted vintage flannel dress, leggings from Walmart and thrifted red maryjanes.  Also, this pumpkin didn’t make the cut because it was too huge.  According to her.

the perfect pumpkin

Just the right size.  She’s been carrying it around everywhere since we brought it home.

the pumpkin patch

We don’t have big plans for the weekend, mostly just enjoy our time together.  I’ll post pictures (I hope!) of Creamie’s Halloween costume on Monday.  It might be my new favorite thing I’ve ever made!  See you soon.

Twink Costume Tutorial

October 20, 2011

Two years ago for Halloween I was Rainbow Brite and Creamie was my little sidekick.  I first posted pictures of these costumes for Halloween 2009.  And since then I have had dozens of requests for a tutorial, or for me to make costumes to sell.  I have priced out what I would charge to make a Twink costume.  And it is over $150 for time and materials.  It isn’t a hard costume to make, but like most sewing projects, it takes a while.  And I am not interested in working for free.  I charge for my time for custom sewing (and so should you!).  And a few people were interested, but not enough to pay for it.  So, instead of selling finished costumes I thought I’d just write the tutorial and if someone is interested then they can make one themselves.  And then everyone is happy.

This tutorial is just for a Twink costume.  I didn’t make the Rainbow Brite costume.  I borrowed it from my sister, and she and my mom made it years ago.  It is a royal blue dress with a full skirt.  It has a heavy interfacing petticoat underneath to make it stick out.  Add white trim around the bottom (this is fusible fleece) and a red belt.  The finishing touch is rainbow striped thigh high socks.  You’ll need two pair.  Cut the feet off of one pair and wear as rainbow sleeves.  Add some killer red shoes and you are good to go.  Now, onto Rainbow’s little Sprite named Twink.rainbow brite and twink costume diy tutorial

For my twink costume I purchased rainbow striped tights (I found mine at a thrift store, but Rainbow Striped babylegs/legwarmers are pretty easy to find.  This pair on Amazon is only $4.  I also purchased a red long sleeved onesie for her to wear underneath her Twink costume.  Now, onto the sewing!

rainbow brite and twink costume diy tutorial

The Twink costume is basically a white fluffy pumpkin.  When I was talking to Scott about it he said “It’s a pumpkin in fun jeans!” (please  tell me someone else remembers this episode of TheOffice…) I used this basic Simplicity pattern and combined the pumpkin bodysuit with the hood from the lamb costume (sans ears).  Simplicity has renumbered their patterns and this is now labeled Simplicity 2788.  It is available at Joanns, Hancocks, Hobby Lobby, Amazon or any number of different places.  I bought mine at Joanns on one of their 99 cent sales I think.  Use the measurements on the back for yardage required.  I am not going to go into that here because it’s all right there in the pattern that I used.

The white fuzzy fabric I used is white  Silky Furry Fleece.  I got mine at Joanns (here it is).  It comes in Red and Brown and Cream and Black and White.  I lined the whole costume with regular white fleece.  You’ll need to line it because the stuffing goes in between the two layers.  Creamie was only 9 months old when she wore this, and I had to take about 10 inches out of the smallest size because it was so large.  The costume has velcro at the shoulders and elastic around the bottom and it goes together pretty easily.  I did modify the hood just a bit, besides leaving off the ears.  I added about 1.5 inches to the length in the back so that it would be long enough to cover all of her neck and meet up with the bodysuit and to make it look like one piece.

The belt was really easy.  1: I used royal blue nylon webbing and a bit of Velcro to hold it together.  After I had the bodysuit finished i measured around it while it was on Creamie and cut the nylon to length.  I used less than 1 yard. 2: For the little pouch to hold star sprinkles I used a scrap of red felt (about 2.5″ x 6″.)  Round the corners on the top flap a bit and then just stitch it together, no need to turn it inside out.  Sew on a button and make a tiny slit for the button hole. 3: The star is from a sheet of stiff yellow felt (you can buy pre stiffened felt at craft stores.)  It is 3.5″ across.  I hot glued a belt loop onto the back so that I could thread it onto the blue belt. 4: Thread the star and the pocket onto the belt and you are good to go.  I decided to make them all separate pieces so that I could wash the bodysuit separately if I needed to.

rainbow brite and twink costume diy tutorial

Her little star antennae are also separate pieces.  Because I was sure the hood would need to be washed after she wore it.

Cut four stars out of the stiff yellow felt and hot glue a big fat fuzzy pipecleaner in between them.  Then I attached the pipe cleaners to two alligator clips with a little hot glue and by wrapping the wire around the clips.  I clipped the antennae onto the hood by sliding the bottom side of the clip through the fuzzy fabric.  I could have made button holes or something but I just shove the clips through the fabric.

rainbow brite and twink costume diy tutorial

I tried to find cute little red shoes for weeks but in the end decided it would be cheaper to just have her wear socks over a pair of shoes she already had.  I bought a pair of red socks and cut off the tops.  I just zigzagged around the edge of them with my sewing machine and she wore them over her shoes.

Put all of that together and it is one of the cutest costumes I’ve ever made.  If you have any questions, ask them in the comments and I’ll try to answer them here as well.

A few nuts and bolts things: 1: If you are traveling, take off the bodysuit before you strap your kid into their carseat.  That one should be pretty obvious.  2: I am not affiliated with Amazon or Joanns or anyone else and I am providing links to products they sell as a convenience to you.  I am sure similar items can be found other places.  3: If you want to make these to sell in an online shop or at a craftsfair or whatever, go ahead.  But please provide a link back to this tutorial in your listing or on a tag attached to the costume.  That’s just being nice.  4: I’d love to see any costumes you make, please email them to me at pinksuedeshoe at gmail dot com or leave a link to your post/picture/whatever in the comments.  Happy Halloween!

Playing in the Woods

October 18, 2011

So you know that magic drug that was supposed to keep us all well for the rest of the winter? Big Giant Fail.  I think I might just have to settle for Creamie being sick for half of the winter.  If she leaves our house she is bound to get sick.  Church, school, library, dance class…. she picks stuff up everywhere we go.  (And yes, I give her vitamin C and vegetables and use hand sanitizer obsessively after we go to icky places.)  Anyway, here are a few more pictures from our weekend away at the cabin.  It was just as fun as it looks.

She is wearing a thrifted vintage sweater, white cardigan from aWalmart,  thrifted skinny jeans and her favorite boots I found a few weeks ago for $3 at a thrift store.  She wears those things almost everyday!

If you ask her what her favorite part about the cabin was it was making a fire and eating dinner in front of it.  When we move a wood fireplace is high up on the list of things we don’t think we can live without.

my little helper

Last night we picked a few boxes of apples from my mom’s neighbors tree.  I think most of the rest of the week will be consumed with making applesauce and apple pie filling to can.  With my little helper at my side it is sure to take 100 times longer than necessary and be a lot messier than usual.  And a lot more fun.  See you soon.  And one day maybe we’ll remember to bring a tripod so we can get at least one picture with all of us together.  But whatever, she’s the cutest one in the family anyway.

Fall Break

October 11, 2011

I mentioned yesterday that we got to enjoy a very nice 4 day weekend with our little family.  The only bad thing about it was today, when Scott had to wake up at 4:30 so he could catch the early bus to work and proceed to be gone for 14 hours.  We need to move.  Like yesterday.  This commute is killing our time together as a family.  But the good things were wonderful.  Beautiful scenery, a beautiful place to stay, warm fire, good food and snow.  Lots of snow.  Creamie loves it as much as I do.  Here are a few pictures from the weekend, and I might share a few more tomorrow.  I mean, I did have to narrow it down from about 500 to these…

navajo lake snow

This was the deepest snow we found to play in.  We just stopped on the side of a very muddy road and hopped out into a foot of snow in this mountain meadow.  Creamie loved it.  And because the top few inches was pretty crusty, she didn’t sink to her hips and was able to stomp around and make tiny little snowballs.  It was hilarious.

navajo lake

This is Navajo Lake, the same lake in the picture I posted yesterday.  Only this year it was a bit colder.  Actually the highway this lake is off of had to close over the weekend because of an avalanche that took out the road.  Estimated reopening? Between two weeks and next spring.

snowy trees

Most of the young aspen trees (those are the one’s with the yellow leaves) that we passed were all bent over with the weight of the snow.  Ideally, their leaves should fall off before it snows.  Otherwise they hold too much snow on those leaves and the weight will literally snap them in half or pull them out of the ground as they bend over.  It was incredible.

building snowmen

Helping her dad build a snowman.  This was the very first order of business, as soon as we unpacked those little boots.

cedar lookout

Yesterday we drove to Cedar Breaks National Monument.  A little sign directs you to a parking lot and a short trail.  Which looks like this.  And then when you get to the edge of that fence?

cedar breaks

Beauty.  Pure Amazing Beauty.  The rim of Cedar Breaks is over 10,000 feet, and this rock amphitheater plunges 2,500 feet in amazing rock formations. A photograph just can’t do it justice.  Last year when we went it was not as snowy, but there was a bitterly cold wind.  With that in mind we came prepared this time.  (Also, this year Creamie didn’t have to wear her mittens on her feet due to poor planning on her parents part… ahem.)  But there was no wind, just warm sunshine reflecting on the snow and amazing beauty all around us.

over the edge

Her preferred vantage point.  HA!  Also, you’ll notice her snowpants are soaked…

stomping in puddles

It’s because the only thing she really wanted to do was stomp in the puddles.  Over and over and over again.  Then she’d throw little snowballs in there and stomp them again.  I think I took about 200 pictures just trying to time that moment and catch the perfect splash.  Victory!

cedar breaks snowman

I built a happy little snowman to watch over the mountain and keep visitors company.  Also, Creamie thinks snowmen are the greatest friends ever.  I’ll share a few more pictures tomorrow and then it’s back to real life.  Halloween is coming up and I’m almost done writing a tutorial for her first Halloween costume.  It is by far my most popular post and I get requests for instructions all the time.  This week!  Yay!

Mini Vacation

October 10, 2011

Hello friends.  I am on my way home from a very much needed mini vacation with our little family.  Scott’s new 4 day a week schedule is finally paying off.  Yay for Friday’s off!  And Because Scott works for the government now, today was a paid holiday to celebrate Columbus Day.  Wahoo! Go Columbus!  Wahoo! Four day weekends!  Wahoo! Vacation!

gone fishing

This is a picture from this same vacation a year ago.  This is one of my very favorite of the family traditions I married into.  (The other favorite is my mother in laws tacos.  Hello delicious.)  I’ll share pictures from this trip soon.  I’m sure when I compare them I’ll be shocked at how much she has grown.  Hope your weekend was fantastic, even if it wasn’t a nice long one.

October 7, 2011

Yesterday I got to meet up with my good friend Amy, and her mom and ridiculously adorable little girl Maggie for breakfast.  She is here for The Sewing Summit and I was lucky enough to snag her for a morning while Creamie was in school. (Thanks to some $60 antibiotics, she is well enough to go to school. Yay!)

me and amy

We met at the Blue Lemon Cafe to catch up and talk about life and have a little breakfast.  It was a wonderful morning and I really wish she lived closer so we could chat in real life all the time.

blue lemon cafe

I am grateful for the interwebs that introcued us, but it is a sorry replacement for real live conversation and cupcakes.

cupcake case

Ok, so we didn’t have cupcakes.  It was still a little early for that.  But they sure had a lot to choose from if we had been in the market for a cupcake.

sweet rolls

Amy did try their sweetroll.  Which considering the frosting on these things is probably pretty close to a cupcake anyway.  Have a lovely weekend, I am off to spend a good long time with my little family.  It has been far too long since we were all well and had time to spend together at the same time.  It’s going to feel like Christmas!

First Snow of the Season

October 6, 2011

I woke up this morning to cold.  Beautiful, awesome, smells like winter, cold. It had rained during the night, and the clouds were still sitting really low on the mountains around my house.  I was sure there was snow under there.  And when I dropped Creamie off at preschool this is what I saw.  October 6, 2011 9:03 am.

October 6 9.03 am

I was so excited for the clouds to lift so I could see the peaks.  Mountain peaks covered with snow are one of my very very favorite things to look at.  But 2.5 hours later when I went to pick her up the clouds that had started to break and lift had changed their minds.

October 6 11.33 am

October 6, 2011 11:33 am.  The same view of the street.  It was snowing hard.  And it’s probably not cold enough for it to stick around for very long, but it sure is beautiful.

October 6 snowstorm

I should point out that last Friday it was 91 degrees (33 C).  It was so hot it broke records for this time of year.  And today it smells like winter and it just might warm up to 50 (10C).  Maybe.  It kind of feels like it is about to the freezing point out there, but I bet that is partly due to that nice wet snow that is dusting everything.  Quite a change for just 7 days.  It smells like winter outside and I can’t wait for the first hard frost that will kill all these pesky plants I am allergic to.  I woke up to snow and had the AC on last night because there is so many floaties in the air I am allergic to I can’t open the windows even a crack.  That right there? Totally Lame.  Hope your Thursday is fantastic, even if there is no snow.

PS- Out last snowstorm was on April 30th. I love that we can have snow for 7 months of the year.  And this year I don’t think all the snow completely melted out of the mountains.  I love it.  Also, thanks to a $60 antibiotic Creamie is finally well enough to go to school.  Which I also love.  And so does she.

Nutmeg Oatmeal Butterscotch Chip Cookies

October 5, 2011

There are just some things that go together.  Peanut butter, honey and banana sandwiches.  Snow and happiness.  Cheese and sprinkles. (Creamie’s new favorite movie is Rio.  She asked for cheese and sprinkles for lunch today. Thankfully she was satisfied with cheese and roasted turkey.) But one of my favorite combos is fall and cooking.  While I love a good pumpkin spice flavored whatever, it is not the only spice of the season.  These nutmeg butterscotch cookies are a spicy fallish combination and I guarantee no one else will bring them to the pumpkin carving/cider tasting party.

nutmeg oatmeal butterscotch chip

Nutmeg Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies

  • 1 cup soft butter
  • 1 cup  sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  •  1 tea vanilla
  • 2 tea milk
  • 1 tea baking powder
  • 1 tea baking soda
  • 1/2 tea nutmeg (or if you want to use chocolate chips sub this for 1 tea. cinnamon)
  • 1/4 tea salt
  • 2 1/4 cups flour (I used all whole wheat, which is why they are a little toasty colored.  You could use all white or half and half)
  • 2 1/2 cups oatmeal
  • 1 1/2 cups butterscotch chips (or chocolate chips)

Cream the butter, sugars, eggs, milk and vanilla together for a few minutes until they are nice and fluffy.  While that is whirling around dump the 2.5 cups oatmeal into the blender.  Pulse it a few times until you have oatmeal flour.  Then add the baking powder, soda, salt, nutmeg and flour to the blender and pulse a few more times to mix it all together.  Add the oatmeal flour mixture to the creamed butter/sugar and mix until just combined.  Add the butterscotch chips.  After your dough is mixed turn on the oven.  The dough needs to sit for about 10 minutes before you bake it so that the oatmeal can soften up a bit.  Turn your oven on to 350 and bake on a parchment lined cookie sheet for 11 minutes.

stack of cookies

So one of my biggest pet peeves about recipes is the baking time window.  Bake for 12-15 minutes or something like that.  After I bought an oven thermometer I’ve been able to nail down my near perfect cooking window.  My oven is 25 degrees cool.  So to get it to 350 degrees I need to set it for 375.  And it takes my oven a lot longer to heat up than it thinks.  When the little “I am hot and ready” buzzer goes off it is usually only 150 degrees in there.  Which is terrible for baking cookies.  But if my oven is really 350 degrees nearly all of my cookeis bake in 11 minutes.  I can only think of a few of my dozens of recipes that take longer or shorter than that.  I bought my thermometer for I think $4 a few years ago.  And I use it every single time I bake.  I think it really helps me to get even results, and it helped me to figure out my oven’s inconsistencies.  (Randomly, if I am cooking at over 425 degrees the oven does just fine regulating itself…. so weird.)

one cookie
I roasted a turkey for lunch, it is nice and rainy and cloudy outside and fall is in the air.  A few bits of random for your Wednesday: The floral sheet in the background of these photos is my alltime favorite thrifted sheet.  When we move next year I am pretty sure it is going to be the jumping off point for our bedroom.  I love it so so much.   Also, getting these cookies to stack up nice and tall like the second picture?  Well, let’s just say it’s harder than it looks.  I had a couple of cookie casualties.  Which was tragic.  But after I ate them I got over the tragicness of it all.

A little Zoo Quilt

October 4, 2011

Today I dropped off my latest quilting project at the little shop where I work.  It has been finished for a few weeks, but I just haven’t dropped it off yet.  I found the main zoo animal print in our clearance area and just couldn’t let all that cuteness go to waste.  So I cut out this quilt and made kits for a few more.  I kind of love how it turned out.

zoo quilt

I was going to give it to my sister, for her baby girl due next month, but it ended up having a lot more pink in it than I think she’ll like.  So, I’ll have to come up with something else.  Which, lets be honest, will be pretty easy.  I came home with a new little stack of fabric today. (Quilt details: 43″ square, made up of 9 patch blocks and large blocks measuring 7.25″.  Inner border is 3/4″ in brown, outer border is I think 3″… I don’t remember now.)

zoo closeup

I really like making baby quilts because I can piece the whole thing together in one good afternoon and evening.  Bigger quilts seem to take forever, but I can totally rock out a baby quilt in one day.  (You know, because at this point in my life I don’t quilt them myself. )  It was just a fun and fast little project, but I really do like the whole process of picking out fabrics and then thinking up a pattern that will work.  Weeks ago, when our first Halloween fabric arrived at the quilt shop I designed and made a Halloween quilt and made up a bunch of kits.  And as soon as my mom saw it she commissioned another for her birthday (which is today, Happy Birthday Mom!).  Those kits sold out in two weeks so I was glad I didn’t wait to bring hers home.  I of course don’t have a picture of that one, so I’ll hopefully have hers done next week so she can enjoy it before Halloween and I’ll post pictures then.  Creamie had a very early bedtime tonight (YAY!) and I am hoping that her new antibiotics help her kick whatever it is she has been sick with for the past 2 weeks.  I’m off to make my favorite cookies, recipe tomorrow.
