Pink Week Giveaway!

June 21, 2010

GIVEAWAY CLOSED: CONGRATS KRISTIN!

It’s Pink Week!  And that means all sorts of wonderfulness.  This whole week I’ll be posting about my favorite pink things.  My one year blogiversary is on Wednesday which is also National Pink Day.  It’s a perfect time of year to celebrate little girls, best friends and all of your favorite pink things.  And what better way to celebrate than to have a giveaway!

Look at all these fun goodies!  To one lucky winner will go the following…

  • A small pink leather journal of lined paper ready to be filled up with notes and ideas.
  • A package of pink hot chocolate.
  • One pink Sharpie marker and a pink sparkly pencil.
  • A cute little floral brooch to go on your jacket or purse (tutorial will be posted this week)
  • A pretty pink coral and pearl’s bracelet to brighten up your wrist.
  • My favorite color of pink nail polish.
  • One roll of pink floral fabric tape.
  • One roll of pale pink (with teeny white polka dots) washi tape.

And of course that’s not all.  You’ve got to have somewhere to put all your new treasures, right?  Of course right.

This little clutch that I finished last week is yours as well.  I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect pink things for this giveaway for a LONG time.  For six months at least.  And I was thrilled to find the pattern to make this little purse a few weeks ago.  It was the perfect finishing touch!  So, here is my Pink Day giveaway in all it’s pink glory.

To enter just leave me ONE comment telling me your favorite pink thing.  It could be anything, a favorite shirt, flower or ice cream.  I will leave the comments open all through Pink Week, and the giveaway will close at midnight on Saturday June 26th.  I’ll post a winner sometime on Sunday. Happy Monday!

PINK WEEK!

It is officially Pink Week here at  pinksuedeshoe.com.  On Wednesday the 23rd is National Pink Day and the one year anniversary of my blog.  (I totally did that on purpose.)  To celebrate I’m going to be sharing all of my favorite pink things, I’ll have a giveaway which I’ll post tomorrow and which you can enter all week.  And then on the 23rd I’m going to have a blog party, which means it’s going to be a day FULL of posts and tutorials to make cute pink stuff and recipes for delicious pink things.

When i was a little girl I didn’t like pink.  Like at all.  But then when I was a junior in high school I bought a pink shirt for a Valentines Day dance.  And then I bought another.  And I liked it.  When I was nervous about something I’d wear pink.  Like for a test, or a presentation or an interview or something like that.  It made me feel good, which made me more confident.  And pink kind of just stuck around.

I don’t decorate my home with it, nor does my daughter wear pink ALL the time  (I do, but that seems different…)  Pink doesn’t consume my life or anything, but I do have to buy toothbrushes individually because multipacks aren’t all pink which is unacceptable to me.  But no matter, I am willing to pay an extra thirty five cents to have a pink toothbrush.  Come back tomorrow to enter my giveaway, this little clutch is going to be a part of it!

Date Night

June 19, 2010

Last night we visited our local PRCA Rodeo for some good summertime fun.  We kicked off the evening with Mutton Bustin’ (small children riding sheep in helmets and protective vests… on the children, not the sheep).  Then there were the bucking bronco’s and the bull riders, steer wrestling, and all the rest that goes with a professional rodeo.  If you live in the West a summer Rodeo is something you shouldn’t miss.  It was so entertaining.  But the best part of the Rodeo?

We celebrate cowboys with strawberries and sweet cream.  Yum.

Pretty Little Clutch

June 18, 2010

Next week is my blogiversary and a very important holiday, on the SAME DAY!.  On Wednesday the 23rd it is National Pink Day and my one year anniversary.  Yes I totally planned that out in advance, and yes it’s a real holiday, google it. To celebrate I am going to have a serious party going on over here.  I am declaring next week Pink Week, starting on Sunday.  Last night I made this little cutie to be a part of my giveaway (it’s not a serious party without a giveaway.)

It’s from the cover of the new Stitch Magazine,  I saw this purse out in blogland a few weeks ago and made my way directly to my nearest retailer to pick up a copy of the magazine.  It was a fast little project and the most fun part was picking out all the little scraps for the petals (30 different pinks mind you.)

I followed the advice of another (whose beautiful purse I can not for the life of me find the link to.    UPDATE: Big thanks to Diane, who reminded me it was TraceyJay’s purse that I had seen.  It’s here.) But she (TraceyJay) is the one who told me about where to find the pattern.  You know who you are (maybe?) and I’d love to look at your bag again….) and sewed around each petal before I assembled the bag. (Wow- that sentence was full of parenthetical statements!  Did you follow all that?) Wonder Under is wonderful, but it wasn’t going to hold all of those on.  (And if I made this again I think I’ll just use a gluestick to attach them to the bag and then topstitch.  Peeling the paper backing off of all of those little pieces was a nightmare.)  Other than that it was a very simple little project which I didn’t start until 10 last night.

This was my first adventure with a magnetic clasp and it went off without a hitch, easy peasy.  Cute lining, no?  I found it on sale for 50% off.  I love that.  The only other modification I made to the pattern was the interfacing.  I didn’t have any regular interfacing (really?) so I used fusible fleece.  I think it worked just fine.  I’ll be making this little bag again, and next time for me.  And when I do I’ll add a pocket inside.  Come back on Monday and enter my giveaway to win this little cutie plus a bunch of other pink things.  And then come back again on Wednesday for some serious pink party action.

I’m adding this to Sew&Tell at Amy’s.  Go visit, as always it makes for a wonderful morning/afternoon/evening/midnight snack.

Stan the Typewriter Man

June 17, 2010

Last night I went to pick up my typewriter from the repair guy I found last week (She needed her P’s and Q’s fixed).  Stan is a wonderful grandpa to some very lucky kids.  He’s got a full head of white hair and he has been repairing typewriters for over 50 years.  His garage and shed are a treasure trove of awesome cool stuff.  I didn’t get as many pictures as I wanted because it was all cloudy and dark.  But he was so fun to talk to, and he had so many beautiful old things besides his typewriters.

I think he didn’t think a young blonde girl would be so interested in his old stuff.  But it was awesome! Old industrial fans, and a beautiful flexible flyer sled. He had a few bicycles from the 50’s and the hubcaps from his very first car, purchased in 1953, a GMC truck.  An awesome oil can that was probably 3 feet high and at least 24 inches across.  It was bright blue and orange and so auto-cool.  I told him he should wire it for a lamp and hang the hubcaps on the wall behind it.  He looked at me like I’d just landed from Mars.  But he told me later (after that had time to settle I guess) that he liked the way my mind worked, and he had never met anyone like me.    Stan could very well be my new best friend.  But what I really went to see was his typewriter collection.  He has dozens from all ages and manufacturers.  Here’s just a few of the beautiful things in his garage.

[ This huge Remington typewriter.  HUGE! And totally awesome.]

[ That worn spot on the space bar is from a right handed spacer.  I’m a lefty spacer.  ]

[ Glass keys with chrome surround.  Classic American beauties. ]

[ These are gears from a guy named Oliver No. 9, produced sometime between 1894 & 1926 ]

No. 9 was pretty incredible.  Instead of his key arms coming up from the bottom to hit the paper (like pretty much all typewriters) his arms swung in from the sides.  When I typed on it it looked like the two sides were getting into a really good fist fight the way the arms were swinging right and left.  So so cool.

As I was talking to Stan about these awesome machines I re-realized I kind of have a crush on old technology.  Old sewing machines, typewriters, and camera’s all dance around in my mind with beautiful old bikes, and sled’s and oil cans, and luggage. (Luggage isn’t really a technological marvel, but it’s pretty none the less).  And after I looked over all of his wonderful old things I made a decision.

[ Early 1920’s Corona with case. I named him Stan after my new friend. ]

This little beauty is now hanging out in my kitchen until I figure out where to keep him.  He is the great great grandpa of LOVE, and I just had to bring him home.  Stan the Typewriter Man has had him for years, just chilling out in the garage.  We were both happy that he is going to a new home.  Little Stan (the typewriter) is in excellent working order, I mean, what do you expect when you’ve been hanging out with a typewriter repairman for the last few decades.  Sort of a quick decision to buy him, but there is absolutely no buyers remorse.  And I’m still thinking about that beautiful big Remington.  Yesterday was a good day, a really good day.

Slow on the uptake

June 16, 2010

I’ve been a little slow getting back from vacation.  I guess that means we had a really great time.  I’ll have a real post tomorrow (and some more info about my upcoming blogiversary giveaway and favorite holiday).

[ I did this drawing for a friend a little while ago ]

I’m going to visit my new best friend tonight.  His name is Stan the Typewriter Man, his words not mine.  He was able to repair the few little things on my new/old typewriter, but it’s his garage I’m excited to go see.  His garage is full of typewriting treasure.  And he told me he’d give me a tour tonight! Happy Wednesday!

Mini Vacation

June 14, 2010

We just got home from a last minute quick weekend trip.  It was lovely, just what we needed right now.

I’ll have some new pictures to post tomorrow but today will be spent doing laundry and unpacking.  I wish I was unpacking this stack of lovelies.

A little teaser

June 11, 2010

This spring and summer I’ve been working on getting things put together and organized in my house.  (I do this every year, do you?)  Things are coming along nicely in most rooms (laundry room is still a disaster zone).  But this room is my favorite.

I’ll hopefully have it done and ready to show you more in a few more weeks.  Happy Weekend!

Vintage Sheet Jackpot

June 10, 2010

Conversation between my sister and my hubby last Sunday.  They were talking about me.

Sister: She always finds the best stuff at the thrift store!

Hubby:  Well, when you go everyday…..

Me: I don’t go everyday.  It’s at least every OTHER day.

Yesterday I came home with these.  All from the same store, all in good condition and the best vintage floral sheet jackpot of all time.  Ok, maybe not.  But the best I’ve ever seen.

The strawberry set on top reminds me of the Sunday dishes we used growing up.  I think I’ll make this into a big picnic blanket.  And the little pink florals and polka dots were too cute to just leave there.  What if someone bought it for a drop cloth, oh the horrors.  I had to save them and keep them from being covered with paint. (I think I paid $12 for all four.)

This one is probably the cutest floral I’ve seen in a long time.  And it is in really good shape and hardly faded at all.  (And I got so excited to take pictures of them while Creamie was napping and the sun was shining that I didn’t bother to iron out the wrinkles.)

But this last one I am the most excited about.  It’s a king size flat sheet and it is all sorts of fantastic.  It’s got a great border print along the top edge and it’s the perfect creamy white.  I am pretty sure that this is going to turn into a summer dress for me, with that border along the bottom edge.  Of course, this might be done until next summer.  My sewing projects are already stacked up.  But if I make this sometime next January it will give me something pretty to look forward to!  I have another little stack of treasures that still need to be cleaned up and/or painted before they make their internet debut.

So, those are my favorites from yesterday’s adventures.  What do you ALWAYS look for when you are at thrift stores/yard sales/ garage sales?  For me it’s chairs, sheets and fabric, luggage and books.  And Pyrex.  But that goes without saying.

A Crafty Ammo Case and Cinderella

June 9, 2010

I found this little green box at a thrift store last week for $1.50.  When I brought it home, still giddy from such a fun find Scott said “That looks like some kind of crafty ammo case.”  I love him. Actually,  I think I will use it as an art journal case.   You know, for when I need to be on the go…. or carry ammo.

I’ve had the little alarm clock (the alarm has never worked) for years.  The globe is a Christmas ornament from Restoration Hardware from several years ago (my twin sister and I both purcahsed the same little globe to display in our front entry’s completely independent of each other.) (And both of us got them on a killer Clearance deal.) The little bottle is a lemon extract bottle from my grandma’s kitchen.  (Bigger pic here if you want to read the label).

I found this book online several months ago, and yesterday as I was taking pictures of my new ammo case I saw it hanging out in a little stack of books. So I stopped everything I was doing and read it again.  My mom had it when she was a little girl and I grew up reading her copy.  Whenever I make apple pie I think of this cover.  For being 60 years old this book is in remarkably good condition.  Oh, and I think it was $4.  It was one of those finds where your heart jumps into your throat it’s just so good.

This is Walt Disney’s story of Cinderella, published in 1950.  Some of it is the same as the movie (also released in 1950) but some of the illustrations are totally different.  I’m really interested to find out which came first…  I’m pretty sure I like this book better.  And maybe that is just because it’s different.  I don’t know.  This pic above is young cinderella, before the step-family comes to ruin her life.

And this is the pretty dress that her little mouse and bird friends make to surprise Cinderella with. “Duh-duh-duh… Happy Birthday!”  “No, no, no, no.” (I love the mice, they are my favorite!)

And of course the fairy godmother comes and does that whole “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo” business and turns Cinderella into a beautiful princess complete with coach and footmen.  And this dress?  WAY better than the blue one.  I used to dream about this cinderella dress.  Complete with the fishbowls attached to the hips.

And Cinderella of course marries the prince and they lived happily ever after, like all princess’s do.  (So after she becomes a princess is her name still Cinderella?  Or does the prince get to call her Ella, or Carmen, or Gladys?)

I had another book that I just loved when I was a little girl.  I think I got it from the Book-mobile because my mom doesn’t remember it and neither do my sisters.  But it was a beautiful book about a little girl with dark hair who got sick but wanted to be a ballerina.  I think it’s from the 1950’s as well, judging on my memories of the illustrations.  I wish I could find one of those books.  I wish I could remember the name of it so I could have a hope of finding it.  Surprisingly when you google “little ballerina book” a gillion things come up.  And it’s not in the top 10, or the top 100.  Shocker.  What was your favorite book as a child?  Do you have a copy now?  Do you keep it in an ammo case?
