A Snow Day

November 28, 2010

Today was a good day.  I woke up to 4 inches of fresh white snow, with flakes still falling.  I love snowdays.  They just seem so warm and cozy to me.  I know that most people don’t love winter and the cold and snow it brings.  But I love winter.  I always feel so much more grateful for the many things I mostly take for granted.  I have a heated home, and a warm coat.  Living in a small condo we don’t have a lot of space, or a garage, but we have a snowcrew which means I don’t have to shovel. I have shoes with thick soles to keep out the snow, and warm socks. My windows aren’t drafty. I can have my towels warm and soft from the dryer instead of frozen on a clothesline.  I have plenty of blankets to curl up under and stay warm.  I have electricity, which means I have light to sew with until 1 in the morning if I want.  I have a pantry full of food that will feed my family for 6 months.  My car isn’t new, but it is dependable and has good tires and awesome windshield wipers.   I don’t even mind driving in the snow.  Because it’s so much faster and more comfortable than having to walk in it.   Yes, I love winter because it truly makes me grateful for all those things that seem less important in the summer.  Who is grateful for their heater when it’s 90 degrees outside?

And one of my favorite things to do on snowy days like today is to curl up on the couch with a giant sized mug of hot chocolate and watch the snow fall.  It is my very favorite ways to spend snowy days.  Creamie is right on track to love it too.  She sat in the window with me and watched for a half an hour this morning.  And that’s pretty good for a one year old.  Anyway, to celebrate this perfect day I’m going to send you a surprise.  Well, one of you.  And, OK, its not a real surprise, because I’m going to tell you what it is first.  But don’t ruin my moment.

One of the great things about winter is the excuse to have hot chocolate before, after, and/or with every meal.  I’m not a tea or coffee person, but I LOVE hot chocolate.  Like, with a ridiculous passion.  But I’m picky.  I only like one brand, and it is absolutely not the stuff you get at Starbucks.  Bleh.  Stephen’s is a company that was founded in Utah a little over 12 years ago.  And since the first time I tasted it, I was in love.  They have a dozen different flavors, and I’ll send your choice of cocoa mix.  I think I’ve tried almost all of them.

To enter leave me a comment telling me which flavor you’d like and your favorite thing about winter.  And if you truly can’t think of anything, tell me one thing you are grateful for.  I’ll close the comments on Friday December 3rd and randomly pick a winner on Saturday the 4th.  Happy Snow Day everyone!  [UPDATE: GIVEAWAY CLOSED!]

Here are the flavors: Dark Chocolate*, White Chocolate*, Milk Chocolate* (I always have this one hand), No Sugar Added Milk Chocolate, Chocolate Cinnamon, Mint Truffle*, Dulce de Leche Caramel*, Candy Cane Cocoa, French Vanilla*, Italian Amaretto, Chocolate Marshmallow,  Mint Chocolate Marshmallow, Peanut Butter Cup, Roasted Hazelnut*, Raspberry Cocoa*,  Raspberry Cheesecake, or Pumpkin Spice* (not a favorite).   Or if you are not into Hot Chocolate, there is also Citrus and Spice Wassail* and Apple Cinnamon Cider* which are divine.  I’ve put a star next to all the one’s that I’ve tried.

French Vanilla. My favorite thing about winter here in my part of Arizona is the electricity bill compared to the 110 degree summers when the air conditioning runs almost nonstop. My favorite part back when I lived in MN and VT was the muffled quiet at night when it was snowing giant flakes.

Wow…that’s quite a variety! I’m a chocolate love, and I the Milk Chocolate sounds the best! My favorite thing about winter is Christmas. That sounds pretty boring, but I do also love watching the snowfall when we get snow–usually at least once in Seattle. It’s so beautiful!

My favorite thing about winter is bundling up in a blanket on the couch and looking at all the Christmas decorations, tree and lights in my house. Or filling up the car with my family and driving to see the best decorated houses – mugs of hot chocolate in hand! And, as far as flavors go, I think the Roasted Hazelnut would be divine. You can’t be the hazelnut/chocolate combo!

You’re seriously going to make me pick only one? Well okay then, it has to be chocolate cinnamon, just cos cinnamon is already awesome but it tastes even better with chocolate.
There is much to love about winter, but my favourite thing is that it happens every year without fail!

So many great flavors! I would have to start with Candy Cane Cocoa since Christmas is coming and I cannot get enough of chocolate and peppermint. I love your blog and I’m jealous of your snow here in South Texas.

    Pink,

My favorite thing about winter is that eventually it ends and because it was so cold it make the tulip bulbs work after things thaw out. Love your giveaway.

    I am grateful for family.

And if I won, I would love to try the Raspberry Cocoa. It’s one I haven’t tried before.

Thanks for an awesome giveaway. You totally rock.

I love watching the wonder on my girls’ faces when the first snow falls, and listening to my girls making plans about what they’re going to do in the snow, and planning out holiday fun for my girls… I just love the wonder of winter with small children, I guess.

And I love Stephens, too–the mint chocolate is my favorite (that I’ve tried), but I have a big ol’ can of it in my pantry already, so I’m hoping for the roasted hazelnut. Mmm. Thanks for the chance. 🙂

I’m thinking milk chocolate or candy cane. or vanilla. I don’t think I could decide if I had to. Do us a favor, e. When you post the winner, send us a link so that the rest of us can order some:-)

I wish I could live in the snow! (but it’s kind of hard to move rice fields). 😉

Surprise me with the flavor… just none of the sugar free ones. (bleh)

    Hi
Ahhhh the wonder of winter…Because I live in California close to the coast…snow is something I know nothing about…but I do love the gray days of winter and fog and rain…I love that you can plant something so beautiful as pansey’s and they can survive the cold. I love the holidays that come with winter because they bring family home to just be together. Old stories and pictures and new memories will be made. (A perfect time to share a cup of hot chocolate 🙂 and my favorite would be Milk Chocolate…with a little Bing and Bowie singing Peace on Earth/Drummer Boy…if you haven’t heard it…it is worth looking on youtube for.
Hummmm I think I need a cup of cocoa right now…

My favourite thing about winter when i was growing up used to be snow days when school was cancelled. We kids would getbtonstay home, go snowmobiling or just watch t.v. Now I live in a city and work for a school board where they never cancel school :(. Oh well, the snow is still pretty.

The roasted hazelnut sounds delicious. I love hot chocolate too!

Generally, I like plain ‘ol wonderful milk chocolate but Dulce de Leche Caramel sounds too good to resist!! My favorite thing about winter is the *first* snow of the year. It’s so much more special than all the other snows… it’s amazing.

Milk chocolate sounds irresistible. I live in Scotland, so our winters are really cold! I love when the snow falls, I feel like my world that I take for granted is being embellished with the most beautiful decoration. And when the snow glitters I almost feel safe in this incredible wonderland. I love the idea of being snowed in, and how winter brings everyone closer together. You sit by the fire with a blanket and loved ones because it is too cold to go outside and I feel at this time of year you don’t even want to go out, because all you need in the world is your family surrounding you..and some hot coco.

Also, a non-related Christmas thought is that each day I wake up my new first thing I do is log onto your blogg! You’ve got a fan in me! 🙂

I think I’d have to go with good ole milk chocolate, but the Dulce de Leche Caramel sounds tempting. Living in Texas as a transplant from the east coast I love anything that resembles winter, cold, crisp air, blustery days, bare branches on the trees and occasionally we even get snow. I am most thankful for the respite from the heat. Great giveaway!

    Milk Chocolate!
My favorite thing about winter is getting a break from the heat! I live in the desert and our summers can get to be unbearable! I love being able to wear long sleeves and sometimes even getting to wear a jacket! I love this time of year and just getting to feel the spirit and love of Christmas!
I love your blog, thanks so much!

Oooo, here’s a chance for me to try something new! I want the peanut butter one. Plus, can I just say again that I love you? You are my Martha Stewart hero–I strive to be like you in all things domestic. I’ll probably never get there, but I’m sure I’ll have fun trying!

  17. November 29, 2010 12:23 pm

    I want one!

My favorite thing about Winter is definitely all the time spent with family. I have lived at least 750 miles away from my hometown for more than five years now, but every holiday season I head back to the Midwest and have at least 4 or 5 days full of family, fun, and food. It’s the best time of year to be around the oens you love =)

As for the cocoa, I’d have to say either candycane cocoa or min truffle. I am a mint and chocolate FANATIC.

Irish Creme… and i can’t seem to find it on the stores anymore! Did they stop making it? I think i might cry.

And my favorite thing about winter- freshly fallen snow, especially Christmas morning. It just makes me happy.

Roasted Hazelnut, please. we’re about out of the mint you brought us. 😦

Favorite thing about winter: Winter is a time of closeness. When the weather is cold, you stay in together. When the weather is warm (here in Houston) you go camping together. The holidays are pretty much all family oriented (sucks if you’re a loner) and so those ties are strengthened and memories are made. I love my family so it’s all good being close with them!

My favorite thing about winter is when it snows a lot, and I can be stuck inside with my family relaxing! Or going out and playing in a ‘good’ play snow. I’m hoping for a good winter this year, this will be our first year in Nebraska! I love Stephens hot chocolate, so yummy!

The flavor i would want is Chocolate Cinnamon, it sounds dee-lish!
The best thing about winter is the Holidays and getting to see family and friends, and just the excitement and coziness in the air that makes it so warm and lovely.

  28. December 3, 2010 10:11 pm

can I still join? This sounds so good and like you are, I am neither coffee or tea person! I don’t like eating chocolate either, but I LOVE sipping them! 😀 hehehe…

I’ve never tried any of them but that Mint Chocolate Marshmallow sounds heavenly! Haha! 😀 aaanddd… here in the tropical country, Indonesia, I never know how winter is like so… 😐

So the thing I’m grateful for? It should be my life? with all my family and friends (and even pets!) around 🙂 I know they’re the best chosen for me, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way no matter how many time I say “I wish I were a cat who can just sleep all day…” lol 😛
