Going Shopping

September 9, 2010

Last summer I saw a little children’s shopping cart that was just as cute as can be.  It was all metal and really sturdy.  Oh, and it was $50.  I passed on it, but decided I should keep my eyes out for one of my own.  And a few weeks later I saw this one at the thrift store.  It was missing one caster on the front, but for $3 I thought I’d take my chances at finding a new one.

going shopping

I only found one hardware store that had the right size of casters to replace the missing one, and it wasn’t Home Depot or Lowe’s.  Thank you Ace Hardware and your store brand casters!  One afternoon last week I took in my shopping cart and the very nice Don, a grandpa himself, spent about 20 minutes wrestling with the bolts to get the old caster off and to securely fasten two new one’s on the front.  And I guarantee that wouldn’t have happened at the Big Orange or Blue.  It only cost me about 35 cents in hardware, plus the new casters, and thanks to Don none of my own elbow grease was required.  And for less than $10 Creamie has a nice and sturdy, all metal shopping cart to fill to her hearts content.  Don, thank you so much.  We are thrilled!

the cart

Creamie has been loading up her cart about four times a day with an assortment of stuff and pushing it around the house.  The only thing that always stays the same is her baby.  That doll does everything with her.  Yesterday she and her baby went shopping for the following:

  • All the receipts from my purse
  • Her favorite books
  • Bits of fabric from the scrapbox
  • Her daddy’s soccer ball
  • Cup of animal crackers
  • Purple sippy cup
  • One white plastic spoon
  • Her purse (gray and blue flowers)
  • Flashlight (it had to be turned on before it went in the cart)
  • A burpcloth, which she uses as a blanket for her baby.

Also every day she asks for a wet wipe so she can wipe down the handle of her cart… just like her germophobe mother.  Man, I love this girl.

new project

These are the scraps from my current project (which ended up on the bottom of her shopping cart yesterday).  I’m going to sew like lightening and try and get these all finished up for Sew+Tell tomorrow.  These scraps are from what will be new living room pillows.  And I am way beyond desperate.  I’ll take some before pictures of the current mess that is passing itself off as the “pillows” on my couch.  It’s a disaster.  Wish me luck!

Okay… that first picture may be the most adorable picture I’ve ever seen. Seriously! Why is Creamie so cute!? I don’t think it’s fair to the rest of us. 🙂

Way to score with the shopping cart. Love it.

Love the shopping cart! What a great find!! Brooklyn loves hers too, but hers is just made of plastic. And that is the funniest thing that she wipes down the cart with a wipe. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brooklyn started doing the same thing. I always have my own on hand just in case the store is out.

There are no shoes in the cart? How is she my niece? I don’t understand.

Good luck! Looks like Creamie is on her way to becoming a very shrewd shopper, scouting deals (don’t want to pass up scraps!) and maintaining shopping hygiene at the same time. Thatta girl! Awesome cart, mom!

That is so cool! I would have loved that as a kid. I remember always wanting to push around one of the mini carts at the grocery store when we went shopping. Such an awesome find 🙂

Creamie is melting my heart as we speak.

Great shopping cart! We need one!

And our couch only has one pretty pillow… that someone else made…

I feel a little weird leaving a comment because you have no idea who I am! I found your blog through my friend Jenny Hill’s blog ages ago and fell in love with the crafts you make and the way you write. I just have to know…where do you do your thrifting?! I hope it’s not a closely guarded secret!

Hahaha! When I first started reading, I was automatically thinking, “Oh, no, E. Bad idea. You’re going to spend the rest of your life every day and night putting your house back together from all the shopping Creamie does.” But then I see that you understand that. My son has a shopping cart that just won’t die. Unfortunately.

I think you should make her a little cashier apron to wear and then she can play grocery store. In fact, she could even wear it to the grocery store. Or Target. Yes, make a red one and let her wear it to Target.

Do you have any idea what brand it is? So adorable and I will have a two year old this Christmas! I really want to get one for her and make all my own food to go in it!

    Pink,

I totally love it! Creamie is so cute with her shopping cart. I just want to squish her cheeks. I love the contents, and the bit about wiping down the handle. Way to train her early.

P.S. next time you go for a gallon of milk, you should let Creamie handle the (i.e. bring her own) cart.

Our grocery store used to have shopping carts for little ones… complete with a tall flag to let the adults know they were coming! I’m glad that Creamie has one of her own. She’s fabulous!
