My Baby Journal

August 5, 2010

Right after Mother’s Day this year I started a new art journal.  It’s small, just baby-sized at only 6 inches square.  I have three others that I skip around in, but this one is different.  I have been trying (but only half succeeding) to do one page per day in this little book.  Just a quick drawing or a little note, a short list.  Some days there is a little color, most days it’s just black and white.  It’s only a few months old, but I have the feeling that this little book is going to mean more to me than any other journal I have.

This is the reason I started this book.  I couldn’t bear to forget her first little sentences.

I need to do better about writing things down in this little book of hers.  She is changing so fast and I don’t want to forget anything.  I hope that one day she will enjoy looking back at what she was like when she was a baby.  And if she doesn’t, I’m sure I could re-read this book every year and never get sick of it.  I don’t know what I’ll do when this book is full.  Maybe I’ll be done.  Maybe I’ll get another for every year of her life.  If she has a sibling I know I’ll do the same thing, only I’ll start earlier.  I don’t feel the need to scrapbook Creamie’s life for her.  I did my own life when I grew up because it was important to me.  This book will be how I document her life, how she changes and how she grows.  And the adorable way she used to say ‘chips’.  “BEE-KAH!”

That book is priceless!! With the illustrations and everything, too, just wonderful. I can imagine it will bring all the memories back to you.

It made my heart ache a bit to know that I’m not doing that and that I won’t always remember those kinds of things with my toddler as has happened with my older kids who are 13 and 9 now. Of course, I remember some. But not like you will with that book.

I can’t think of a nicer gift Creamie could ever receive. An illustrated story of her life written and illustrated by her sweet mother. She is so lucky. My husband is an airline pilot so I especially loved your page with the airplane and the fact that she can spot an airplane “a mile away.” I do the same thing, but I also watch in the sky for their contrails. Now, those are beautiful! My husband flew his airplane to Israel and India this past week. He absolutely loves his job! And I love reading your blog. Kathi

This is a beautiful idea! And so much better than those pre-made baby/memory albums! I would have loved if my mom would have kept something like this, and I will definitely keep this in mind for future children. I love that last page with the food illustrations and Creamie’s pronunciations–so adorable 🙂

SO in love with this. I wish that I had written more things down, but now I have a daily moleskine that I jot myself little notes in so that I can go back and pretend that I kept lists like this. 😉 I did write each boy a letter every month for the first 2 years of their lives. Now I have to just do it annually – it’s gotten to be waaaaay too much for me to try to keep up with. But I do love those letters and some day I will make a little book and hand write each of them (I type them for now and no one but me and my husband really read them… I used to post them to my livejournal…).

Can you believe I have only done uh, like 3 prompts from Tell Your Story? GAH. Must get to Kinko’s and have my little book put together like you did. I’m so in love with that idea and I NEED to journal!

Didn’t mean to make this all MeMEmeMEmeMe! Sorry. 😀 I feel inspired now, though, thank you!

I wish I was as clever as you when my kids were young. I kept a little lined notebook in my bedside table to record their most priceless statements…like the time my daughter simply refused to get off the swingset for dinner. She got so angry with me insisting, that she hopped off the swing, ran to face the fence with her arms crossed and shouted at a plank of cedar “I will never not eat again!” Or the time she told her big brother she could talk to God on the phone and when he said ‘show me’ she replied “I can’t…. the government won’t like it.” I think she was 3.

I love your journal and Creamie will, too! It’s given me a great idea……

this is really a great idea! I love how you put down the little things that Creamie does. I want to do something like that when I have kids in future! It’s gonna be so memorable. Thanks for sharing! 😀

This is an adorable idea. And I like that your drawing – that little babe of yours will be able to enjoy as a child (before she can read) and will probably always treasure it. And I think your drawings are just perfect. 🙂
